Currently under the "Wait and See"
-The current procedure is to wait until the curve is at or near 25 degrees before beginning treatment. Routine x-rays are scheduled to monitor the spine in a recommended time frame. Waiting until there is a larger curve is a reactive approach. Our solution to this is to begin treatment as soon as scoliosis is detected. All diseases including scoliosis are always easier to treat in their earlier stages compared to later on. A curve at 10 degrees is not too small to begin treatment since there is negative health effects associated even at this magnitude
Contemplating a surgical procedure?
-Many patients have sought care at our clinic with success after being recommended a surgical procedure. In fact, most scoliosis cases do not require surgery. There are numerous side effects of the surgical procedure which typically involves spinal fusion. Surgery limits the natural and essential motion of the spine, resulting in numerous consequences. Research has shown us that the long term follow-up results reveal pre-operative curvatures. There is also an inherent risk of hardware breaking after the surgery, or being damaged to a point that requires surgical re-intervention.
Have been prescribed a hard/rigid brace?
-The success of rigid bracing methods remains a debate among health professionals. When hard bracing is considered a "success", this means that the curve didn't get worse. Hard bracing has not shown to reduce curvatures, only halt progression. The recommended wear time is 20-23 hours per day. Commonly, compliance is obviously a barrier to success in these cases. In addition to compliance research shows that curves often return to pre-bracing angles. The correction didn't last! Serious psychological issues may also arise in children wearing the brace. We do not rely on rigid bracing.
